Wood pellets are a high-quality renewable substitute for oil and coal — recoverable, reliably supplied, and capable of cutting both carbon emissions and air pollution significantly. Here are six reasons to choose them:
1. Lower transport risk
When an oil tanker ruptures a pipeline or spills its cargo the result is marine or groundwater contamination, and there is always the possibility of an explosion causing injury or loss of life. Incidents of that kind are far less likely when transporting wood pellets. Pellets are also easier to store and to move over long distances, and can be delivered straight into storage bins to suit the customer’s requirements.
2. Stable supply and pricing
Because timber is a recoverable material and supply is generally sourced locally, wood pellet availability remains high as the market continues to develop steadily. For households in Europe and North America, annual heating costs are a serious economic consideration; set against the volatility of oil prices, many consumers prefer to buy wood pellets.
3. Reduced greenhouse gas emissions
Wood pellets are markedly more environmentally sound than conventional energy sources such as oil, natural gas and coal. A single household switching from heating oil to wood pellets can cut carbon dioxide emissions by roughly 5 tonnes per year.
4. Less air pollution
Particulate Matter (PM) 2.5 refers to particles smaller than 2.5 micrometres, which can pass directly through the respiratory system into the lungs and affect the airways either directly or indirectly, causing respiratory and skin allergies. Burning raw coal and petroleum coke is one of the principal sources of PM2.5. Banning them is estimated to cut sulphur oxides by 5,595 tonnes (40%), particulates by 757 tonnes (73%) and nitrogen oxides by 8,200 tonnes (53%) each year — a substantial improvement in air quality.
5. Renewable energy legislation
More than half of the wood pellets imported into continental Europe are used in power stations. The EU Renewable Energy Directive has driven the development and use of renewables, requiring member states to reach 20% renewable energy in national consumption by 2020. At the Paris Climate Conference in December 2015, leaders from more than 200 countries agreed jointly to reduce global carbon emissions in order to slow global warming, and encouraged local governments to commit to renewable energy.
6. Government subsidies
As global warming has drawn wider attention, many governments now encourage the use of renewable energy — with solar, biomass and wood pellets frequently placed among the priority categories for subsidy.
